LtM, if you have PSVR and Tetris Effect goes on sale, I would recommend it just for the experience. Just play through The Journey on easy, you don't really need to like Tetris mechanics to get down with the audio-visual stuff, especially in VR. I think Brad made a really good point that Miz's stuff makes a lot more sense in VR.

Over 100 media outlets and some reader/user awards from those sites. Giant bombs Goty is only picked by one other. Last year they picked PUBG which only won goty on that site if I recall.

Currently GoW has over 60 RDR 2 has over 50. 20 odd for everything else.

Imo GoW deserves it but in another few weeks another 50 will be added. Could go either way.

At least its competitive this year. Zelda dominated last year.

PUBG won a few but was like sixth, in a year without many options because Zelda was (deservedly) so dominant. Giant Bomb has consistently made small minority picks since 2015. Before then the game they picked was always one of the most common winners. The closest to an exception is XCOM, and that still won about as many critics' awards as Mario Maker, Hitman, PUBG and Tetris Effect combined.

It's clear that their GotY has transitioned from "the consensus best game" to "the game that meant the most to the site". That's good, in many ways, but should just be acknowledged as such. Last year in particular, calling a game that barely worked better than incredible feats like Breath of the Wild, Nier Automata, and Mario Odyssey seems insane. But did it mean more to the site? Absolutely.

Destiny was a near-broken shell with potential marred by a story that made no sense and almost no content. RDR2 is a masterful story and world that is visually and aurally incredible, with gameplay issues.

Also Most Disappointing has peak Brad. And Dan becomes a Brad.

The God of War discussion is really good. I loved hearing where everybody was coming from regarding previous games, it framed their reactions in a different light. Abby made her points really well (though I do disagree on the Valkyries specifically), and was pretty clear that she liked it a lot too. It is silly how much attention has been given over 5 minutes of talk, though I will say that unlike last year the vast majority of the discussion has been very civil, I checked a bunch of sources and saw like three arseholes.

And one of them is in this very thread!

Saw it on Monday so have had time to digest. It's a lot of fun, but dumb as a bag of hammers. It's mostly good dumb, though the pace is so breakneck and the events are so ludicrous, when it does try to slow down and have an emotional moment it doesn't always work. That said it's hugely entertaining and I really liked it overall.

Second best of the new DC movies after Wonder Woman. And I can see how many would prefer this because it's more even.

It's a cool mobile story-based puzzle game that uses the puzzles as a metaphor for different parts of a relationship. It's neat, and the kind of thing I had never heard of until awards season. It is exactly the kind of game that shows the necessity of awards.

L-Block wasn't great until the last couple of matches. Undertale was pretty meh since every match after the first one was a foregone conclusion except for Melee.

Minor correction regarding the Game Awards stuff:

Fortnite was not nominated for GotY, and I think it wasn't even eligible as TGA allows games the year they become playable, so Fortnite was eligible last year. Either way though it is hugely popular I don't think many are pushing for it as a GotY contender.

Not gonna detract from this, since I'm more convinced this is the work of anti-NN rallies, but do characters still count as Noble Nine killers if they're not distinct enough to break out of being stand-ins for Clinkeroth members? I mean, Zelda is literally the name of Link's game. Tifa, on the other hand, is FF7, but still manages to stand very much out from Cloud thanks to 1: JUGS, and 2: not being in KH1.

The attempts to discredit Zelda are quite incredible. If Zelda was a Link stand-in she would have been godly from day one and Ganondorf would have been top tier. The notion that post-BOTW Zelda is less distinct from Link than Tifa is from Cloud is absurd, and you seem to know it since your qualifiers are breasts and lacking a cameo in a 16 year-old game.

What we are seeing is the power of BOTW and Zelda's character in that.

She clearly is not. If there was a Link proxy effect, A) Ganondorf would be godlike, B) this would have happened before, and C) she would have beaten Sonic and Snake by a lot more. This is clearly down to Breath of the Wild, with a bit of bandwagon mixed in.
